Winter Tires - Safe Driving in Snow and Ice
Winter tires are mandatory in Latvia from December 1 to March 1. They are specifically designed for safe driving in low temperatures, on snow and ice. Properly chosen winter tires can significantly reduce accident risk in the cold season.
Why are winter tires so important?
Winter tire rubber compound is softer than summer tires and maintains flexibility at very low temperatures. The tread pattern with numerous sipes provides better grip on snow and ice. Braking distance on ice can be up to 50% shorter compared to summer tires.
Types of winter tires
Nordic type winter tires
Designed for harsh winters with deep tread and soft rubber compound. Ideal for Baltic climate. Popular models: Nokian Hakkapeliitta, Continental VikingContact.
Central European type winter tires
Suitable for milder winters with frequent rain. Good compromise between snow grip and wet road performance: Michelin Alpin, Bridgestone Blizzak LM.
Studded tires
Best grip on bare ice. Permitted in Latvia from October 1 to May 1. Note that studded tires create more noise and cause faster road wear.
Winter tire storage and care
Store tires in a dry, cool, and dark place. Tires on rims should be stored horizontally or hung, while tires without rims should be stored vertically, rotating periodically.
