Tire Markings Explained: How to Read 205/55 R16 91V

What each symbol means
205 — tire width in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall.
55 — aspect ratio: sidewall height as a percentage of width. Here: 205 × 55% = 112.75 mm.
R — radial construction. Virtually all modern passenger tires are radial.
16 — rim diameter in inches. The tire must match this exact rim size.
91 — load index. 91 means each tire can carry up to 615 kg.
V — speed rating. V allows speeds up to 240 km/h.
Where to find the correct size for your car
Your manufacturer's recommended tire size is listed in three places: on the driver's door jamb sticker, inside the fuel filler flap, and in the owner's manual. Always trust these references rather than what is currently fitted — a previous owner may have changed the size.
The DOT code — tire manufacturing date
Look on the sidewall for a 4-digit code following the letters DOT. For example, 2324 means week 23 of 2024. Tires older than 6 years should generally be replaced even if the tread looks fine — rubber loses elasticity over time.
